Wide Angle Adapter to FishEye Lens
Wednesday, November 12th, 2008Everyone should have heard of fisheye lenses, they are used to capture wide scenery and objects into the frame. The results are often very nice and attractive, thus it is one of the popular lenses in both photography and videography.
However, most fisheye lens don’t come with a cheap price, they are around RM1000 or above. With this expensive price, not all people manage to get fun of it.
Recently, I found a trick on the internet, it turns the wide angle adapter, which costs around RM150-RM200, to a fisheye adapter. I know you can get the commercial fisheye adapter directly, which costs around RM400, if you could afford that, by all means please go for it as it delivers a better “FishyEye” results. I didn’t plan to spend so much on this thing, so I just got myself a wide angle adapter for RM150 and start modifying to add the Fishy effects. Here are the steps on how I did it.
First, you need a wide angle adapter (of course), and a small flat head screw driver.

Notice that there are 2 dents on the side of the adapter, that is the ring to lock the glass element of the adapter. Use the screw driver and turn the ring in anti-clockwise till u got the ring come out totally.
Now you can see that I have completely taken out the ring.

Take out the glass element and clean it.

Flip the glass element overside and put it back to the adapter.
Now you need to put back the ring so that the glass element wouldn’t fall out.

And there you got.. A FishEye adapter.
Now go get some fun with it.
Here are the photos I have shot with and without the adapter.
Without the Adapter, Lens at 18mm

With the Adapter, Lens at 18mm

As you all might have noticed, the edges are blurred out. The only area that is in sharp focus is the center. This might not be as good as those real FishEye lenses, but heck, it is cheap.. lol.
Try it with different type lenses and you might get some interesting results !!
